Alexandre Gustav Eiffel: Tower of power

Experiments in iron construction reached a pinnacle in France with the construction of the Eiffel Tower (1885–1889). At 984 feet high, it was the tallest structure in the world until the completion of New York’s Chrysler Building in 1930. Engineer Alexandre Gustav Eiffel designed the tower as the gateway to a world’s fair that was held in Paris to mark the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. It’s shown in Figure 12-2.
